Monsoon Tea, a pioneer in "forest-friendly" tea, is revolutionizing the industry by integrating cutting-edge technology to protect Thailand’s northern wilderness.

Through a groundbreaking collaboration with the AI Center at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and supported by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the company has launched the world’s first AI-powered biodiversity traceability project.

Listening to the forest

At the heart of the initiative are solar-powered IoT sensors installed deep within the tea forests of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son.

These devices capture the acoustic fingerprint of the ecosystem, recording the specific sounds and behaviors of birds and insects.

Using advanced AI algorithms developed by experts at AIT, these recordings are analyzed to identify species and calculate a biodiversity score on the five-level Rimdahl-scale.

This data allows the project to move beyond visual assessments to scientific measurements of how much biodiversity the tea-growing areas are actually adding to the environment.

From biodiversity to blockchain

The project’s innovation extends to its financial model. This increased biodiversity is translated into blockchain credits or tokens within a dedicated traceability app.

Farmers, acting as guardians of the forest, can track their impact and "cash in" these tokens for extra income.

By providing a direct financial incentive for preserving native flora and fauna, Monsoon Tea ensures that local communities earn more by keeping the forest standing than they would by clearing it for traditional monoculture plantations that often involve slash-and-burn practices that contribute dust particles and pollution to Thailand’s extensive PM 2.5 issue.

A new standard for luxury hospitality

Already a staple in Thailand’s most prestigious high-end hotels, Monsoon Tea is now offering its partners and guests a new level of transparency.

Every cup of tea can be traced back to its specific forest origin via a QR code, allowing consumers to see the exact biodiversity score of the tea they are enjoying.

This collaborative effort between farmers, tech experts, and tea lovers is not just about a premium beverage; it is about changing the tea industry from the ground up to ensure a nature-positive future.
